Problems

I'm having problems getting in touch with the producers of the Devlin song. The problem is i cannot find an e-mail or anything anywhere, I'm not even sure if it is the rite label. 5this label is Universal Music UK, which is an offspring of the Universal Music Group. They have off springs all over the world, i have an address and a contact number but i don't want to write a letter or phone them up about something so informal.

Universal Music Direct
364-366 Kensington High Street
Kensington
London

Above is their address and below is their contact number. I've put these on just in case there are no other options.

0845 070 2036

This is their website, i cant find anything that will give me a clear e-mail address but i have managed to put the question to the support team some how so hopefully i will have a reply soon.

Ooops

I was talking a while ago about what music i want in my trailer. It was really hard and i managed to file it down to a few different songs. Well the thing is i was bored the other day so i was listening to random music and i heard a song which just clicked. The name of this song it

Devlin - Brainwashed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRob2t2PPek

gives a real urban feel towards it, i think it would suit it down to the ground. Now all i have to do is write to the producers of the song and ask if i am allowed to use it for my trailer. I will update this message when i have a reply. Just to remind myself i will leave i bold sentence.
UPDATE WHEN HAVE A REPLY

Collective identity within the media

I need to represent identity for each of my characters, identity within media can be a muddle, everyone wishes to have an identity, something unique about our self, representing this in my trailer will give the audience a feel of knowing with whats going on eg. ' I've been there before'. Interpellation - the social.ideological practice of misrecognising our self can be seen in today's media. the fact that people are seen as we want to be seen is a matter that is beyond peoples capability. What i mean by this is that, girls for instance look at a magazine cover, there is a beautiful model on the cover and they want to look like that. Matters like this is what is currently providing people their identity in my opinion. an example is shown below.

As you can see the picture above is gut wrenching. If these are the lengths people go to to have their ideal identity then it obviously plays a huge part in peoples lives. This will have a big impact on my trailer. I aim to stereotype each person ed Hearts and Danny will be in hoodies, urban associated and their physical performance will look different to Elizas which will be smartly dressed and posh. Hopefully taking the stereotypes to the extreme will convey to the audience in the way i want it to.

The types of identity in my trailer are shown below.

As you can see a Gangster a Posh Woman and a Thug. These are the stereotypes i wish to put into my trailer.

Damn

Turns out the day i wanted to do my shooting i couldn't, it was really wet and the fog was ridiculous, that bad you couldn't actually see anything, i tried to do it the next day but turns out i couldn't get my hands on a camera, hmm.

I'm going to try and get hold of one later today so i can shoot early tomorrow morning. At least then i can get my 1st scene shot. I now know that the majority of my shooting will be done on the Wed the 15th of December down London. I will be shooting places such as Waterloo, Camden and Hyde Park. I will be setting off early in the morning maybe about 8am due to it is going to take me 3 hours to get down there. I will be coming back at around 4 or 5pm so i will be back in Kings Lynn for 8pm.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

In this link it will show an area of London at the moment the computers aren't working so i couldn't upload the print screened picture, i had highlighted the areas I'm going to and the potential areas these areas are Greenwich, London Bridge, Regents Park and a few more.

Film Logo

At the moment I'm making Logos for my film, i was thinking of something catchy, i had a few random words down and what i liked the most was Slight Tilt Films. It has a buzz about it that i like so i am going to use this for my logo on my trailer. Also this name gives a ring to the sport of basketball, which you could think is ironic with what happens in the film itself. below are a few ideas of logos i will put what i like and dislike about each.

I like this idea because it gives a symmetrical look. I think the key is to not make it very complex that way it will look good.
I think maybe the logo itself can be different but that isn't such an issue. Maybe the font could be different.

I like the look of this one because it gives a very arty looks towards it. I like the font. I don't like the fact that is is all on one line i don't think i want it like this, i want it to dominate the screen so everyone can
see it.

I really like this one due to it looks great, as if a sword is going through the wighting. I like that the righting is black and the image is grey it gives a good backing look.
I cant see any bad points in this logo.

If I'm dead honest i like how the layout of the words are in the box as if its getting delivered. But i don't really like this logo compared to the rest of them.
The one that is highlighted in green is the logo that i am going to use. I will put this in my trailer at the beginning to introduce the film.

First Shoot

I will be doing my first shoot this weekend, i am going to start filming at around 6:45 am so hopefully i will catch the sun coming up. It will be the scene of Danny sitting by his mother and sisters grave. I'm going to use a circling hand held shot to close in on Danny. I will use a couple of cuts in the scene to go to extreme close ups showing a bit of personality in Danny with the he has by him and the way he moves.
This is a place called Long Sutton which is a town near me. This will be the grave I'm using to set the scene, this will be a good place to film because due to the trees i will get restricted lighting, this hopefully will give a great effect when the sun rises.

Backing Track

For a long time i have been thinking of songs to use as my backing music for my trailer, should it be rock? should it be hip-hop? should it be rap? All these have been taken into account below i will attack some links of songs from the website Youtube. i was thinking about rap songs and hip-hop due to it will stereotype the trailer, this may not be a good thing but it will get the point across to the audience which is what i want.

Lil Jon - All the way crunkd up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ovn62EK4uY

Lil Wayne - We be mobbin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6BkUqkbzcc

Trick Daddy - Lets go
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7osb_J6EQb4

Shorty Da Kid - Wah wah waw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9WickIHOn4

Young Jeezy & Kanye West - Put on
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aEImx74gLA

Soulja Boy ft Bow Wow - Marco Polo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bi40powiPrc

This is the problem i have so many songs i like i cant pick one to use, i cant use parts off all of them either because then it will ruin the whole thing, the reason i cant is because it wont be fluent in the trailer and it could cause the audience to get confused thinking what has gone on here. The songs i have highlighted in green are the songs i think i will use i just need to narrow it down to one song. I need to use a gangster sounding track but the thing is they all fill that category.

Another massive point is that i need to write/ e-mail the producers to see if i am allowed to used their song for my trailer i will be doing this asap. hopefully i will be allowed to. if not then i need to find other song to use in my trailer that I'm allowed to use. i will be showing this e-mail on my block upon acceptance.

Thoughts

We were getting told how to correctly us the cameras in last lesson, i was quite familiar with most of the functions after using the cameras before but we got told in more depth than what i knew so it was good to know the information.

I was hoping to get a cinema looking effect but in that you apparently loose the quality of image so I'm now in a dilemma to what to do. i think i will go for the HD high quality look due to i don't want ti to look rubbish. I still need to film the first scene, I'm currently working on what script there is but mainly it is voice over that is on the trailer so it isn't much of an issue. I can record my voice over at any time and then edit it into my trailer whenever i feel it is rite.

I need to get this trailer rite because i want it to have an impact on the audience. I have a great idea going through my mind but its not as easy doing it as just thinking it. The difficulty at the moment is also the time of shooting, i need both night and day and to be in a place like London at night shooting seems a bit daunting but everything should be fine. Close places that i shoot in wont be a problem. I am still thinking of what plugs to put on an intro page, i don't know what 'awards' the film has gotten as it begins. I'm thinking Baftas and Oscars but i may be wrong in thinking this. This is something i need to go over in more detail, but once again it isn't a big issue at the moment due to i have bigger things to worry about, like shooting it first.

I may struggle with my friend Cara playing 'Eliza' acting due to she is a little shy and this may show in the eventual playback, I'm hoping to sort this out by making it really calm and casual while shooting. I think the best way is to have a laugh whilst i do it, that way everyone is chilled out and hopefully no one feels out of place. I know that Pete playing Danny will be fine and myself playing Hearts. The good thing is that I've sorted out my scenes so that the camera whilst filming is shooting a wide shot, this way all i have to do is set the equipment up and start recording, there will be no issues with needing someone to do it for me. I will be doing all the filming.

I'm trying to use as many different types of cinematography as possible, hopefully this will provide a better outcome while watching it. The montage may consist a voice over but if not a voice over there definitely will be gangster music, i need this music to set the feel to the audience music will be a big factor of my trailer, my next post will be different songs.

little background

These two pictures are what i am going to use to film in, this particular scene is going to be where Eliza and Danny used to live (they didn't know each other at the time). I will use these scenes to contrast the shooting in London. There wont be a lot of rural filming like this but below are two pictures of the where abouts it will be.

This location is just down the road from my college i have slightly enhanced these pictures to give a better look.

I'm hoping that these pictures contrasted to the London filming will look very rural and the London shooting will look very urban.

I am currently drawing more ideas for my poster and magazine. I am going to use a programme called Quark Express, this is the programme i used for my AS Media, i think it gives a good effect and is very precise with every last bit of detail you add. The weather hasn't been very good lately so i haven't been able to go out and find any inspiration for my cover or my trailer.

I am trying to think of ways i can merge cross media convergence of my film trailer. I think i can only do this once the filming has finished and edited, then it can be placed on mobile phones and sent around which would build up hype about the film. I have arranged to go down to London around early December time to start shooting. I can shoot the start of my trailer at any point due to the location/setting of the first scene is only 20 Min's away. I want to try and get ground fog which will really set the scene so i will have to get up very early in the morning to begin shooting. Knowing that i cant control the weather i can only hope there will be ground fog, if not i will continue to shoot and make the best of out of the scenery i have.

In the past few days i have been worrying about who to have do the voice over for my trailer, I'm starting it off with the grave scene and a voice over this will then be broken up but a gum fire. after a long-ish first scene i will be showing a montage of scenes with gangster music, i aim to blend these in the best i can in sequence so the viewers will get an idea of what happens in the film. I'm going to end the trailer with a cliff hanger leaving the audience thinking whats just happened? Who got shot? Those type of things.

little sketch

This is a small sketch of a few bits that i may use in my poster. It is slightly graphic design, but to rough to tell whether it would turn out good. i have tried to illustrate what i meant by flowers coming from the bottom and framing from the right corner. i haven't included any trainers or the rite sort of gun as yet, i was merely doodling thoughts down.

This small sketch shows what i mean by graphical but obviously is nowhere near finished. i just wanted viewers to see the sort of thoughts i had in my mind.

I will add a major backing photo maybe be the one of us underneath this picture or both split in the middle then it will show a contract of both characters.

Characters

Oooo the main characters, my friend Pete and myself will be doing a lot of the acting in the film with a few other friends used as extras, it will be difficult to do this because i have to be director camera man and sound coordinator. Therefore my role will not be a big one any i will use a montage of clips put together to give a bigger effect towards the audience with some gangster backing music.

This is Peter, he is playing the protagonist in the film trailer. the character is called Danny Stone, he has lost his mother and sister due to a gangster with a grudge, but mistaken Danny's mother and sister for another lads.

I am playing the antagonist, i will be giving instructions while i am acting. My characters name is Hearts, this is his name due to he was playing cards with one of his gang members and they were cheating, he killed his own friend by shoving a queen of hearts down his throat causing him to suffocate. I shot Danny's mother and sister !!!

This is my friend Cara, she will be playing a girl called Eliza Smith who is a daughter of powerful Law Lord that works in the Royal Court Of Justice, and The Supreme Court in London, she gets caught up in the wrong situation and the wrong people to be around. She ends up being with Danny but will Hearts let that happen ???

In todays lesson

In out recent lessons we have been doing about adverts, now this part of our lessons don't correspond with what the film package is all about. BUT the fact is the ASA set restrictions and points adverts must be within. These consist of points like honesty, truth full, decent and legal.
Me and a friend put a Power Point Presentation together to show examples.

This is the presentation we had made, it shows the adverts we thought appealed to us the most.
Now I'm getting to my point, even though this has nothing to do with my film trailer or poster or anything within the package, i want to give these points. I want the audience to feel as if this is something that could actually happen, and to have factors in the trailer which have verisimilitude with everyday life. This will then give me the angle so give a trailer that looks class but then on the same hand looks as if it could be real. this will be how i grab my audiences attention and hopefully it will work in my favour. i am shortly going to upload some photos that i have taken that i may use as my background for my poster and magazine.

Tuesday, 9 November 2010

These pictures i have attached are the type of objects you will be able to see in my poster i will do a trainer like this with the graphic design approach with the flower effect coming out of it, it should look very unique and original, if not i will change it until i am happy.

This is the gun that i will use within the bordering effect trying to blend it in. i may give the effect that this gun is melting or dripping with blood. these a stereo typical guns that gangsters use in films, mini uzi. Using this in the poster you could say gives a verisimilitude of the everyday life of a gangster.

I like the thought of this being in the centre of my poster but this image isn't really graphic, plus i think i can draw something better than this. I will also give everything a melting effect which will give a feeling of running out of time. the pose on the person playing basketball in this picture tho gives a great feel of intense action. the ability to slam dunk showing great athleticism.

I will also put in the odd camera like this. It will show that the characters in the film are being constantly watched, it also gives the feel that even the protagonist may be the antagonist, who knows. it also gives the audience a sight to what may be in the film, cameras = security = police, things like drug searches and high action brawls.

Poster ideas

After thinking about my poster i have thought what what would be the best way to reach my target audience on their level of image. By this i mean a younger audience would rather see a more graphic design approach rather than some 1950's effect. this has made me research different unanimous items in graphic design. the picture below shows what i mean by this.
I aim to use these abjects to sort of border my poster, using only specific objects will also let me show my type of genre, things like guns, boom boxes and blood splatter will show a rough grimy atmosphere towards the film. The characters on the poster will be split up by a basketball hoop, the good and the bad. i may use colour on the good character to make the audience aware of who is the protagonist in the film.

This is what i aim to use in my poster. These images may not be used but something along the same lines. i like the circle effect near the centre. i aim to use them certainly with maybe a graphic flower affect, this will give me the chance to show a urban area conveyed against a rural area. this will also be seen in the beginning of my trailer. SPOILER - which starts off with my main character sitting in front of his mothers grave with lots a greenery around him showing he is in a rural place then contrasted to the mean urban streets of London.

This is similar to what i mean by a graphic urban effect. i have also taken some simple photography shots that i will upload one of which i am going to use for my poster background. these flower designs will be black on my poster, in fact there wont be much colour in my poster at all i will use the black and white to contrast and get the audiences attention that way. the ability of using no colour helps give a more graphical design as well which is what i need to successfully get my approach rite.

I am now in the process of sketching ideas together, i hope to achieve a good looking poster that will stand out towards my audience. This poster would be a big part of distribution. Taking that into account i need to get this poster looking perfect and the way i want it to look, anything lower that the expected outcome wont be good enough.

Ideas for the film package

There are many different types of marketing your film, the stages of Production, Distribution and Exhibition have been modified in many different ways. They modify to how the film has to represent to its specific audience. eg. what women want - featuring Mel Gibson. This film had to reach an audience showing the title obviously its aiming more at women than any other category. they may do this by aiming there product at women's products eg shampoo adverts with the film in it, such things as that.

There are many many different synergy with businesses, this ability to merge with a business can produce great rewards with your product, it gives you the ability to get it out there seen and heard.

This then made me think how would i want to market my film, obviously posters which i have started to sketch out, i will upload these when i have the chance. I was also thinking cross media convergence, the ability to see my trailer of the film on phones and such. also web 2.0 on social networks like facebook. This would give me great distribution to my trailer and i could then see if my target audience is watching and liking what they see. This is like a little experiment, its quite exciting to see how the people will react and to see their opinions. criticism will be taken as a good point, it will give me the ability to strenghten my trailer so it wont have any flaws if any.

~ Questionnaire about the different film trailers ~

The results of the questionnaire

Key of numbers below = Bad - Average - Good

What did they think about the freestyle trailer ? 7 24 19

What did they think about the crossover trailer ? 18 18 14

What did they think about the streetballers trailer ? 3 16 31

What did they think about the snatch trailer ? 29 11 10

What did they think about the man on fire trailer ? 12 10 28

What did they think about the adulthood trailer ?
12 30 8

As you can see from these results they are very random, each film trailer was shown to 50 people and each had to reply in the bad, average or good section, like a tally. As you can see from the results the film trailer man on fire was most liked by the people. The most disliked was the streetballers trailer. I was finding quite a bit that the seemed to put a lot on average, i couldn't make out if this is whether they understood the trailer or maybe some other reason. That was one problem with these results it doesn't really show a one sided situation where the people obviously like that specific type of film. Maybe its because all the films have a urban mise en scene to them all and they were confused to what they were meant to be doing ?

The last week ideas

Over the last week i have been bringing together a collaboration of ideas and thoughts. i have been travelling to different parts of the country places such as urban parts of London to places such as the Lake district. I have taken advantage of these places by using ideas to give elements to how i shoot my trailer. I have also used the urban part of London to influence how i design my poster for my film package. ( these ideas will be posted ) i have decided with the poster to take a graphic design approach, i also thought of this technique due to the fact I'm naturally talented at graphical design.

I have also been going around the Internet researching some of my favorite movies that will fall into the genre category that i have chosen. I have also used the ability of cross media convergence to get a better feeling of how peoples thoughts influence the films reviews. in this i used my mobile phone to hold a trailer called freestyle, this is one of my favorite movies. I took a collection of people and asked them questions about the trailer. I have taken these recordings an put them into a bar chart showing the results. ( I will post these soon ) Below are some of the trailers that have influenced me and have given me ideas for my own.

Trailer links

freestyle trailer

crossover trailer

streetballers trailer

As you can see these three trailers are all about basketball and each one has a very strong urban element present. as basketball is one of my favorite sports i will use this element in my trailer, it seems that drugs, alcohol and basketball seems to be a part of a gangsters everyday life.

snatch trailer

man on fire trailer

( Take note that this trailer/film isn't gangster but gives a great urban feel in some parts, it is one of my all time favorites and deserves to be taken into account)

adulthood trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhrJBUMxNMQ

All of these trailers have given me insentive and ideas to use. the basketball trailers being my favorite due to the fact the interest me more, apart from the man on fire trailer. I may use and adapt some ideas from these trailers and make them as my own to represent what i am trying to convey to the audience.

Film poster inspiration.

Adulthood poster.

This poster shows what i think looks like a thugs life the same thing is shown in the poster below.

Kidulthood poster

This poster is the 1st film poster of the thug life in modern london area scenery. this gives me inspiration to use the views of the city to give a quick crowded feeling towards the audience.

Shank poster

This is a new film, as you can see each of these films give the impression of urban genre. the fact is the costume scenery and colours. these are determining factors which will make the audience encode and decode.

Snatch poster

Snatch is one of my favorite movies. it shows you again urban/ gangster feeling, but the movie has an element of comedy in it. that isnt a bad point it works !

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

A very simple poster showing this film, i am liking the look of a more graphic design look, i think grapgic design with a photo could show great contrast, which is what im having in my trailer.
